The struggle continues...
Further to yesterday’s article,
Doctors are savers of life is the usual thinking of people and so we submit to the doctors our body and soul whenever we go for treatment.
But in my case the doctor has become a lucifer. No doubt there are few good doctors in the society because of whom I am alive and able to narrate my experience before the world.
I would like to further elaborate my medical negligence as to how and when it happened.
After doing preliminary investigations the above operating
surgeon advised me to undergo bladder augmentation with appendicular vesicostomy
operation for urinary incontinence which could be beneficial for me to manage
with my urinary incontinence. He had
performed only MCU test before going for the operation.
On 7th November 2002, the surgery was performed with a special permission in a children’s hospital given by the then, Superintendent Dr. S.V. Sharma. BEFORE GIVING THE PERMISSION THE SUPERINTENDENT DID NOT GO BY THE NORMS OF THE MUNICIPAL CORPORATION UNDER WHICH THE HOSPITAL IS WORKING.
For performing this operation doctor did not take my consent, only consent of my mother was taken. For performing this operation lumbar puncture was done to give epidural analgesia / anesthesia by the team member, of Dr. Supriya Gajendragadkar who was the head of the Anesthesia team. This lumbar puncture is contraindicatory in Spina Bifida cases as per the medical literatures.
On 7th November 2002 I was taken for operation for bladder augmentation with appendicular vesicostomy operation. During the surgery the lumbar puncture for giving epidural analgesia / analgesia was given, after which I lost sensation in both my legs below knees whereas before the operation the loss of sensation was below ankles. This surgery could have been done under general anesthesia also, but the surgeon and the anesthesia team leader choose to do the surgery under general anesthesia along with spinal analgesia.
The doctor had promised to do bladder augmentation with appendicular vesicostomy surgery which would be beneficial for me to manage with my urinary incontinence problem, but surgeon performed only bladder augmentation surgery which was revealed to me after 20 days, the surgeon had omitted to performed appendicular vesicostomy and I was left with Suprapubic catheter lifelong.
The loss of sensation was reported to operating surgeon and
the anesthesia team. No treatment, medication or required test which was
prescribed by the visiting doctors was not carried out till discharge by the
operating surgeon or the anesthesia team.
This has created damage to my entire life and increased my problems. Which has led me and my family to great mental, physical and financial catastrophe.
